Job Purpose

The Dir, Category is responsible for the development and implementation of a uniform strategy, guided by the overarching merchandising vision that will deliver sales and profit targets for a designated portfolio of categories. This role will develop and manage vendor relations and create dynamic partnerships that fulfill the company’s quality standards and cost savings. He/She will lead and mentor a team of category professionals focused on driving category growth and company sales.

Strategy Creation                                                                                                          

Lead the development of the merchandising strategy, business planning and product/program definition (extends 6-12months out for key initiatives). Develop the roadmap for a cohesive vision for a portfolio of categories utilizing market and industry knowledge. Ensures that the category team is fully indoctrinated into category roles within the portfolio.

Relationship Management

Use leadership skills to manage internal and external relationships for successful strategy execution. Utilizes a high degree of collaboration with internal business partners to ensure alignment on company objectives and support of initiatives. Collaborate with suppliers to achieve desired sales and profitability.

Day to Day

Execute the strategic vision for the portfolio. Coordinate all promotional activities for a portfolio of categories. Utilize experience and knowledge to achieve category P&L goals, forecast sales, profits, and shrink. Responsible for financial outcomes across the portfolio.

Leadership Development

Manage, coach, and develop a team of professionals within merchandising. Build positive relationships and foster a learning environment that will promote associate growth and success. Develop succession plans and create development goals for the team.

Qualifications

Required Education

Course of Study

Bachelor's Degree

Business administration, finance, merchandising, supply chain management or related field.

Preferred Education

Master's Degree

Business administration, finance, merchandising, supply chain management or related field.

• Strong financial / business acumen

• Effective communication and presentation skills

• Ability to build and maintain relationships

• Experience managing merchandising for a large business unit while creating a positive business return

• Strong ability to proactively strategize department wide initiatives and implement plans timely & effectively

• Ability to read and understand business proposals and contracts

• Experience in re-energizing categories to regain profitability

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred

• Advanced degree in Business Administration, Finance, Merchandising, Supply Chain Management or related field.

• Proven category experience in a retail environment.
