Sr Teradata Database Administrator



Job Purpose

This Sr. Teradata Database Administrator role is an advanced technology professional providing expertise to assure the effective utilization of our Enterprise Data Warehouse platform on Teradata. This role is responsible for leading our Teradata team in all manners related to the design, development, build, and continuous monitoring and support of large scale multi-terabyte enterprise data warehouse databases.


Essential Responsibilities

Perform independently and set direction in areas such as database modeling, logical and physical design, application and system architecture design, performance tuning, complex troubleshooting and DR testing/planning. Advise leadership on high impact data or database management issues and influence strategic direction. Serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) as required for design reviews and technology and tool selection. Develop database design documentation such as data decompositions and data flow. Perform as the primary DBA from inception of the project and through the daily maintenance phase of a project. Perform capacity planning including allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements and state of environment. Provide guidelines for development and production. Create and execute scripts for various database maintenance activities.


Develop, implement, and maintain BAR strategy for the Teradata (TD) application and system databases. Maintain TASM guidelines and monitor and adjust TASM related workload settings for optimal workload prioritization. Utilize backup, recovery and replication techniques to ensure cost-effective recovery. Actively monitoring the health of the Teradata system and Teradata Managed Servers (TMS) using tools and application servers and make preventive or corrective actions as needed. Support the database system and application server support for the Disaster Recovery (DR) build/test, annual drill, and maintenance as needed. Review and resolve Teradata alerts and communicate risks, issues, or potential impact to management and business users through appropriate communication strategy. Provide daily support for user issues such as slowdowns, inconsistent rows, re-validating headers for tables with RI constraints, PPIs and configuration.


Analyze resource trends and predict growth for capacity planning purposes. Collaborate with the development teams with design, implementation, and performance tuning of new and existing applications.  Provide senior level Teradata input to support the application development teams for database needs and guidance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• 5+ years experience as Teradata DBA on Version 14+; 5+ years SQL experience

• 3+ years ETL using Terada Utilities in Unix/Linux environment

• 3+ years performance tuning in a large database (>5TB) or data warehouse environment, using advanced SQL, DBQL and explain plans

• 3+ years analyzing project requirements and developing capabilities

• 3+ years identifying and initiating resolutions to issues associated with a Data Warehouse or equivalent system

• Expert understanding of SQL, the ability to rewrite SQL and to advise users on how to write their SQL to be more efficient

• Expert understanding of Teradata and utilities; Ability to support and implement technology projects as the primary DBA in support of business initiatives

• Proven diagnostic problem solving and solution development capabilities

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate complex and detailed technical information across all levels and multiple departments

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred

• Teradata Certification, Other RDBMS Platforms (Oracle, SQL Server, Db2)
