Sr Director, Construction



Job Purpose

The Sr. Director, Construction plays a critical role in developing and executing SEG’s Capital Improvement Plan. Lead the development and delivery of strategic plans for Construction and Office Services projects. This position will review and qualify building contractors and provide guidance to the construction management team on construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications and to maintain company standards for project time, cost and quality. This position will also manage the preparation of estimates and documents required to obtain approvals for new retail facilities, remodels and expansion projects. This leader will interact closely with cross-functional teams throughout the organization as well as with external vendor/agency partners to ensure alignment and compliance with company design criteria, merchandising and operation needs and budget guidelines. The leader will continually seek to improve cost efficiency, quality, and project delivery. This role will attract, retain, and develop Team members by fostering an environment that provides direction, continuous development, commitment to common goals, and shared values.


Essential Responsibilities

Provides leadership, coaching and direction to the retail facility construction and office services teams, working both at SSC and in the field.


Leads all aspects of the construction process for all store and office facility construction (new, remodel, and capital improvements) including the creation and implementation of a construction strategy (e.g. bid vs. negotiated work, design-build). 


Develops relationships with key stakeholders in all functional areas of company to coordinate new store and remodel construction activities, store turnover and opening dates and store promotion objectives. 


Establishes and maintains relationships with developers, architects, engineers, general contractors and equipment vendors. Develop and maintain a network of pre-qualified construction contractors in all operating areas to ensure best-practices and competitive bidding for all projects. Negotiates vendor agreements when required to ensure contract compliance and manage relationships.


Collaborates with Real Estate teams to determine feasibility for development of new store locations and budget estimates.  


Collaborates with Store Design to ensure designs meet company and landlord criteria and that construction documents comply with architectural standards, building codes and health and safety regulations. Assists Design Department with preparation and updates to prototype plan development, including feasibility analysis, material selections and construction means and methods.


Maintains construction status and projected store opening/promotion reports. Coordinates construction contract administration activities, change order processing and pay application processing for all construction projects. Processes capital budget expenditure requests. Manages overall Store Development CapEx and FF&E budget and spend.


Conducts periodic store visits to provide mentoring to associates and to ensure construction work is in compliance with company standards for time, cost and quality. Provides clear and frequent communication updates to project stakeholders on the status of on-going construction activities. Drives continuous improvement through review of processes, execution, and results.

Construction, architecture, engineering or related field.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

• Demonstrated strong PC skills including proficiency with the primary Microsoft Office applications.

• Demonstrated ability to understand and interpret complex construction drawings using conventional and computer skills.

• Extensive architectural, engineering, refrigeration and construction materials and techniques knowledge, as well as specialized supermarket construction expertise.

• Strong working knowledge of construction contract documents and standard form construction agreements.

• Ability to manage and direct multiple complex projects simultaneously to drive solutions that meet or surpass business expectations and deliver project milestones on-time and within budget.

• Possess a valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
