Job Purpose

The Sr Dir, Category is accountable for establishing and executing category plans, strategies and tactics delivering on sales, margin and inventory objectives developed within the Fresh/Center Store leadership teams. This leader will develop the 1-3 year strategic plan by category and by customer type, subsequently delivering multiyear growth. The Sr. Director must demonstrate that they are a Reliable, Empathetic, Accountable and a Leader (REAL), while driving the organization’s strategic vision.


Essential Responsibilities

Lead the category team and all associated categories. He/she will collaborate with the Category Management team and departments throughout the organization to develop and execute promotional plans, set pricing positioning, strategize and implement category and assortment plans. He/she will also prioritize product development projects, support visual merchandising objectives, manage vendor relationships and achieve item data accuracy for the multiple categories for which they are responsible.


Accountable for creating strategies and tactics that will support and enhance the company’s critical success factors, brand values and competitive position to improve the customer experience across all channels. The Senior Director is responsible for strategically developing the method by which we engage customers from a product and services perspective. These strategies and tactics include the effective use of customer insights and segmentation, vertical engagement and assortment optimization.


The Sr. Director, is responsible for building a category team, having an emphasis on the professional development of the Category Managers, Analysts, and Category Coordinators within their team.

• Develops, establishes and manages the strategic direction for multiple categories.

• Develops, maintains, and achieves category margin and sales plans.

• Supports the Category Managers in owning the vendor relationships with the goal of obtaining lower COGS on an annual basis.

• Supports the category and planning process to include new category & item development, managing category promotional plans, and ensure first to market positioning whenever possible. This should include leveraging appropriate marketing vehicles for the category utilizing customer segmentation to drive sales.

• Collaborates with Supply Chain to develop category inventory plans and work to implement strategic initiatives to drive results.; This includes but is not limited to inventory health management and strategic vendor management programs.

• Regularly reviews competitors to understand our competitive advantages and positioning.

• Partners cross-functionally to support category strategies and the needs of the business. This would include but is not limited to understanding and maximizing channel levers (ie Salesforce, web analytics, marketing engagement, and retail store  engagement).

• Financial evaluation experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Preferred

• Preferred 8+ years of hands-on experience negotiating contractual agreements in an international business environment; 8+years marketing/product development.

• Follow market trends. Use this knowledge to support internal customers, reduce costs and develop sourcing strategies.

• Conduct benchmarking and industry assessments to identify best practices and implement successfully within SEG; and culture.
